California Coachella Festival Draws the Big Names
By DONNA BALANCIA
The worst-kept secret in Coachella history was confirmed as Rage Against The Machine will reunite to headline the annual Indio fest along with Travis Scott and Frank Ocean, it was officially announced.
While hip hop and R and B dominated the 2019 lineup, the 2020 lineup for the April 10-12 and April 17-19 weekends at the Empire Polo Club is populated this year with alternative, punk, mainstream and pop performers, offering something to suit all tastes.
Rage Against The Machine Reunites
The big news is the reunion of Rage Against the Machine, but it’s actually considered “olds” because the reunited band posted the Indio dates on its Instagram account in October. Prophets of Rage filled a gap but fans were longing for the return of Zack de la Rocha. Frank Ocean answered the fans pleading to return to the festival, his last Coachella was 2012 and Scott is also a return performer, having played Indio fest in 2017. Lil Nas X, who has emerged as one of the world’s most popular performers thanks to his cross-genre tune and well-loved “Old Town Road,” makes his desert debut.
Lana Del Rey, Thom Yorke, Run the Jewels, FKA twigs, Megan Thee Stallion and Danny Elfman are among the broadly anticipated and diverse musical acts featured this year. Many of the bands that landed on the California Rocker lists, and those that perform in the area clubs, are plentiful on the extensive Coachella performer list.
Del Rey is on a hot streak with the album Norman Fucking Rockwell and the album landed on the California Rocker Best of 2019 list.
Coachella 2020 Gets Local Lift
Many of the performers that have played the local festival roster are on the Coachella stages including King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Chicano Batman, Bedouin, BADBADNOTGOOD, Mannequin Pussy, the Regrettes and Idles.
Hot punk band Idles is among the UK bands that has found major fans in the U.S., and joins fellow Britishers at the fest including Anna Calvi who owes her U.S. fans a show, Sleaford Mods, Lewis Capaldi and slowthai, whose album Nothing Great about Britain was on the California Rocker best albums of 2019 list.
Danny Elfman and Fatboy Slim Represent Retro
Among the retro acts are the beloved performers Elfman, known for a range of music from Oingo Boingo to his multitudes of music scoring including “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure,” and Fatboy Slim, the veteran UK D.J. who is no stranger to the festival scene. Among other works, Slim, AKA Norman Cook, is known for forming Brighton Port Authority with David Byrne. He wrote the single “Weapon of Choice,” featuring Bootsy Collins, which was made popular in the award-winning video starring Christopher Walken.
