OPINION – With the overnight success of Beyonce’s latest album it’s a sure bet that more artists will use the “surprise” social media method to sell records.
But while analysts are singing the praises of Beyonce’s marketing move, several factors converged to enable success: Beyonce’s upcoming tour, holiday gift-giving season and her superstardom.
David Bowie set the example with social media and a “surprise” strategy to release “The Next Day” earlier this year.
So while social media is the latest marketing avenue for these superstars, could this strategy work for lesser-known artists? It remains to be seen.
But Beyonce and Bowie killed the press release and have embraced an exciting new era in marketing.
