At The Drive In Releases Single and Video for ‘Hostage Stamps’ Off New Album, ‘in • ter a • li • a’

By DONNA BALANCIA

At The Drive In has released the single “Hostage Stamps” with accompanying video. “Hostage Stamps” is one of the new tracks off the album in • ter a • li • a, which will be released in May.

At The Drive In is on tour with Le Butcherettes, with several California dates in May. Some recent US dates include a pop-up performance at SXSW and some make-up dates from last year.

“Hostage Stamps” is the third single from the soon-to-released album in • ter a • li • aout May 5th on Rise Records.

About the song, frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala says it’s  “like walking through the hallway in some war-torn ghetto and reading the writing on the wall. When you hear things like, ‘Raise your nithing pole,’ I don’t think anyone will know what that is right away, but when you look it up, it’s this curse.

“We are going to be victorious. Here’s the fucking head on the stake in front of our army. We’re coming back. It’s reading the writing on the wall. It’s going and keeping your ear to the ground and listening to the heartbeat of young people.”

California Rocker Wins Three Awards at 2016 NAEJ

By DOTTIE PARIS

California Rocker, the online music magazine, won Best Photo Essay and Best Action Photo categories Sunday night at the National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Awards by the Los Angeles Press Club.

The awards were presented to California Rocker producer Donna Balancia at the annual awards gala that honors the best of entertainment journalism.  The event was held at the Millennium Biltmore in downtown Los Angeles.

Best Action Photo was awarded to Donna Balancia for her image of Cedric Bixler-Zavala, the high-energy frontman for At The Drive-In, leaping into the air at the Hollywood Palladium.  California Rocker wins included third place in the same action photo category for a beautiful image of the legendary surf guitar master Dick Dale performing to an adoring crowd at The Whisky A Go-Go.

“I started California Rocker three years ago to give independent artists a voice,” Donna said. “Their voices were clearly heard tonight as our work was selected over that of the corporate media.  We will continue to work with up-and-coming and established musicians, writers and photographers so talent and truth can shine through.”

Previous wins include the work of Heather Harris in the LA Press Club’s first-ever Photo Essay category, for her images of musician James Williamson’s all-star concert at the Bootleg, and Donna’s image of Flyin’ Jay Armant, of the band Fishbone, launching into the crowd at the Roxy Theatre.

California Rocker has had several finalist designations and this year was no exception. California Rocker took three finalist designations among five in the action photo category and Suzanne’s Photo Essay was among three finalists.

The Melvins, Teri Gender Bender and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Form Supergroup, Crystal Fairy

New Single Precedes February Album Release

By DONNA BALANCIA

Teri Gender Bender of Le Butcherettes, Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover of the Melvins, and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of At The Drive-In have formed a new group, Crystal Fairy, and they’ve released a new single.

Featuring Teri on the vocals, the song, “Drugs On The Bus,” is what you would expect from this alt-rock supergroup of commanding new-era punkers.

Of course, Teri’s unique vocals come through loud and clear and she takes over the song with her celebrated bravado.

The first, self-titled, album by Crystal Fairy is expected to be released February 24 on Ipecac Recordings.

The bandmates came up with the idea for Crystal Fairy when Le Butcherettes were playing gigs with The Melvins. Rodriguez-Lopez and Teri are friends who share a similar take on music as The Melvins.

Le Butcherettes are in Europe on the Raw Youth tour.

By DONNA BALANCIA – At The Drive In and Le Butcherettes made it two nights of wild entertainment, putting on their physical music at sold out shows at the Hollywood Palladium.

ATDI frontman Cedric couldn’t help but do his routine stage diving, and the audience was more than happy to oblige and also join in.

The Hollywood Palladium was packed wall-to-wall with people and it goes to show the popularity of the bands.

Pent-Up Demand

Most people who attended said they’ve wanted to see both ATDI and Le Butcherettes “for a long time.”

That’s because in the case of ATDI, the band has been on-again, off-again but showed it was fully on for this two-night affair.

set list ATDI

set list ATDI

ATDI played most of the crowd favorites, too many to mention (see attached set list photos) and the group was in top shape.

As for Le Butcherettes, if you have missed them, that’s your own fault.

Teri Suarez, known as Teri Gender Bender, the front woman of The Butcherettes, joined her pals as the supporting act, and this is clearly a match made in Heaven — or Texas or somewhere. They’re two phenomenal bands that share players and obviously share a lot of attitude in common. They are both a pleasant relief to today’s tame Rock N Roll.

As we can’t say enough good things about Teri’s performance — she knows how to electrify the crowd and throw in a stage dive or two herself — we are going to leave it all up to the photos to tell the story of the performance.
