‘A Star Is Born,’ ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Hit High Notes with Oscar Nominations

“A Star Is Born” secured eight Oscar nominations and “Bohemian Rhapsody” grabbed five to represent music-themed movies at this year’s Academy Awards, it was announced. The Lady Gaga-Bradley Cooper picture and the Rami Malek movie each also earned a Best Picture nomination.

“The Favourite” and “Roma” led all nominations with 10 each, including bids for Best Picture along with “BlacKkKlansman,” “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Green Book,” “A Star Is Born” and “Vice.”

“A Star is Born” was nominated for Best Picture, and secured Best Actress and Best Actor nods for Gaga and Cooper; a Best Supporting Actor bid for Sam Elliott; Best Adapted Screenplay for Bradley Cooper, Will Fetters and Eric Roth; Best Original Song for “Shallow;”  Best Cinematography (Matty Libatique) and Best Sound Mixing. Producers on “A Star Is Born” are Billy Gerber, Cooper and Lynette Howell Taylor.

Gaga set a new mark: She’s the first person to be nominated for Best Actress and Best Original Song (for “Shallow”) in the same year. Also, since Cooper performs the song with Gaga in the film, he is the first person to receive both a Best Actor and Best Original Song nomination in the same year.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor for Rami Malek, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Film Editing.

“The greatest honor from playing someone like Freddie Mercury is getting the acceptance of legendary bandmates Brian May and Roger Taylor,” Malek told Jimmy Kimmel last September. “Oscar’s big, there’s no doubt about it.”

“A Star Is Born” also received a Best Original Song nomination for Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt, as performed by Gaga and Cooper.

Best Original Song Nominees

Also nominated in the Best Original Song category were “All the Stars” for “Black Panther,” written by Kendrick Lamar, Al Shux, Sounwave, SZA and Anthony Tiffith as performed by Kendrick Lamar and SZA; “I’ll Fight” for “R.B.G.,” written by Diane Warren as performed by Jennifer Hudson; “The Place Where Lost Things Go” for “Mary Poppins Returns,” written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman as performed by Emily Blunt; and “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” for “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” written by Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch as performed by Tim Blake Nelson and Willie Watson.

For Best Original Score nominees are “Black Panther” (Ludwig Goransson), “BlacKkKlansman” (Terence Blanchard), “If Beale Street Could Talk” (Nicholas Britell), “Isle of Dogs” (Alexandre Desplat) and “Mary Poppins Returns” (Marc Shaiman).
