By DONNA BALANCIA

Ty Segall rocked the first of three sold-out shows at Teragram Ballroom in downtown L.A. promoting his album Freedom’s Goblin. Some special recording people were on hand indicating the psychedelic rocker may be releasing a live album. ( #DeformingLobes )

Segall and the ‘Freedom’s Goblin’ Album

Freedom’s Goblin is the 10th album in 10 years for the prolific rocker who has amassed a catalogue on a budget. And that DIY attitude carries over his to his merch. Some T-shirts were being sold complete with iron-on letters so the purchaser can arrange and spell out the name of the album on his or her very own shirt in individual style. ( #cherryred )

If you’ve been to a Segall show you have heard the songs before, but new songs on the Freedom’s  Goblin album that he performed include “Shoot You Up,” “Alta,” “My Lady’s On Fire,” and “Fanny,” about his beloved dog.  The music is both beautiful and incredibly hard rockin’ simultaneously.

The Beatles and Neil Young Influence

On the album, Segall’s love of The Beatles and 1970s music, comes through loud and clear on the album’s songs “Cry Cry Cry,” and “You Say All The Nice Things.”  The songs have intricate and complicated melody lines. It’s apparent Neil Young has played a role in the guitar work on the album as well, particularly on “And, Goodnight,” the final song of the album.

Segall and Cool White Garb

Ty and the band dressed in all white, even down to the shoe polish on the frontman’s oxfords. You couldn’t help but notice as he crashed down on the pedals while performing.

Segall is a showman who give the performance his everything. And joking around as he may often do, even in his songs, there is a serious musician here who deserves the recent spate of accolades he’s finally getting.
